Smartype was the world's first predictive typing system, which is also known as automated word completion. It was invented by Joe and Maria Weber. Patent filed in 1990; awarded 1994. Smartype has had a list price of $150 for many years, being purchased primarily by medical transcriptionists. It has dramatically improved their productivity, saving up to 70% of their keystrokes. Narratek has now decided to make it available at no charge.
